Reseller License Requirements

If you will be reselling Hopelands Coffee products:
it is legally required to have a reseller license/certificate on file with Hopelands Coffee, LLC to purchase tax-exempt wholesale products for resale in all states, with these exceptions:

The following states do not require a reseller license: AK, DE, MT, NH, OR
(please include your business tax ID in both fields below)

The following states allow a sales and use tax permit to act as a reseller license: CA, FL, TX
(please include your business tax ID in both fields below and copy of your sales and use tax permit)

If you do not have a reseller license and it is required by your state, your account may still be approved, but it will be treated as a non-reseller account and taxes will be applied as required by law. Please see additional information on reseller licenses below.

Reseller License Information

In the US, a reseller certificate license, also known as a resale certificate, is a document that allows businesses to purchase goods and products from wholesalers without paying sales tax. The rules and requirements for obtaining a reseller certificate license vary by state, but there are some general guidelines that apply to most states:

1. You must have a registered business: In order to obtain a reseller certificate license, you must have a registered business that is recognized by the state in which you operate.

2. You must have a valid sales tax ID number: To apply for a reseller certificate license, you must have a valid sales tax ID number or permit issued by your state's department of revenue or taxation.

3. You must intend to resell the goods: The purpose of a reseller certificate license is to allow businesses to purchase goods for resale to customers. If you are purchasing goods for personal use, you will not be eligible for a reseller certificate license.

4. You must provide documentation to the wholesaler: When you purchase goods from a wholesaler using your reseller certificate license, you must provide them with a copy of your certificate or permit.

5. You must follow state regulations: Each state has its own rules and regulations for reseller certificate licenses. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the requirements and guidelines specific to your state.

It's important to note that a reseller certificate license does not exempt you from paying sales tax on items that you plan to use for your business, such as office supplies or equipment. It only applies to goods that you intend to resell to customers.

Sales and use tax permit vs. reseller license

A sales and use tax permit is not exactly the same as a reseller license or permit, but they serve similar purposes.

A sales and use tax permit, also known as a seller's permit, is a document that allows businesses to collect and remit sales tax to the state on taxable sales made to customers. This permit is required in most states in the United States for businesses that sell tangible goods or provide certain services.

A reseller license or permit allows businesses to purchase goods from wholesalers without paying sales tax. The business will then resell those goods to customers and charge sales tax on the final sale.

In some states, the same document can serve as both a sales and use tax permit and a reseller permit. In other states, separate permits or licenses may be required for each.

It's important to note that the rules and requirements for sales and use tax permits and reseller permits can vary by state, so it's important to check with your state's department of revenue or taxation to determine what permits or licenses your business may need.

Obtaining a reseller license

The process for obtaining a reseller license, also known as a resale certificate, varies by state in the US. In most cases, you will need to apply for a sales tax permit or license from your state's department of revenue or taxation. Some states may require you to register your business before you can apply for a sales tax permit.

To find out the specific requirements and procedures for obtaining a reseller license in your state, you can visit your state's department of revenue or taxation website. The website should have information on how to apply for a sales tax permit, what documentation is required, and any fees associated with obtaining the permit. You can also check out this helpful State-by-State Guide: How to Get a Sales Tax Resale Certificate in Each State.

You can also consult with a local business attorney or accountant who can help you navigate the process of obtaining a reseller license in your state.
